Art & Design

Head of Department: Mrs T O’Horan
Art & Design Photo Gallery

All students on years 7 – 9 follow the Key Stage 3 programme of work designed to meet the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum.

Year 7 pupils start a programme of work which is designed to meet all the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum, and provide a balanced experience which allows all students, whatever their ability, to extend their knowledge, skill and understanding of Art, Craft and Design.

Key Stage 3 is seen as one ‘unit’ where experience in Year 7 progresses via a series of modules towards a point at the end of Year 9 where pupils can, if they wish select Art as a GCSE subject, and be confident that they will be well prepared for the demands of the course.

Most of the modules have a mix of practical, and relevant contextual work. This is an important element because it encourages pupils to view art as an area of study like other in the school curriculum, in addition to enjoying the particular visual language unique to Art.

Art and Design is an optional subject at Key stage 4. Students follow the GCSE Applied Art and Design (Double Award Course). The awarding body is AQA

Aims :

-
To stimulate pupils interest in Art.
-
To encourage pupils to see art as a significant area of human experience.
-
To encourage pupils to see art as relevant to their society and world at large.
-
To enable pupils to deliver a body of artistic knowledge, skills concepts and vocabulary.
- To enable pupils to develop a range of desirable personal qualities such as safety awareness, politeness, perseverance, initiative and independence.

Objetives. The above aims are put into practice by:

-
Providing a variety of experiences/activities during a programme of study.
-
Using the National Curriculum Key Stage 3 Orders and GCSE requirements for art as the basis for a planned scheme of work.
-
Encouraging pupils to recall prior knowledge and skils to subsequent work as the course develops.
-
Providing opportunities for discussion and group activity.
- Providing opportunities for pupils to appreciate the diverse range of sources from which artists , craftspeople and designers from different places, generations and cultures derive their inspiration ideas and direction.

Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. Pupils use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think.
