Since gaining our specialist status we have fully integrated Media into the Key Stage 3 curriculum. In English, Media is used to enhance learning in many areas, using animation, Comic Life and film. Students also engage with the language of Media from year 7 as they create a brochure advertising North Axholme School. Students write reviews and use Media terminology in order to authenticate their work.
Media based clubs are well-established in Key Stage 3 which run after-school and at dinner times. We have a Photography Club, a Film Club, and a Newspaper Club, all of which are well-attended and enjoyed.
We are lucky enough to have a Media Technician, Catherine Dowdy, and a wealth of Media equipment at our finger tips. The students regularly interact with the cameras, video recorders and animation equipment.
Creative Practioners have worked with both students and staff during our time as a Specialist School and have shared their knowledge, experience and expertise with us in order to enhance the teaching and learning of Media. The Creative Prationers have supported us in a number of projects including animated film, photography work and a Parkour inspired film which was successful is winning a prize at the Scunthorpe Young Persons Film Festival last year.
We have run a series of Media based trips and events such as a BBC Blast trip last year which was enjoyed by students and staff. This trip gave students a taste of different sectors of the media such as Radio Drama, Dance and DJing. This year we are going to celebrate our work and successes in Media with An Oscars Evening which will showcase the students' work and achievements.
At Key Stage 4 students can elect to take Media BTEC as a vocational course. This is a very popular choice and increases in number each year. This course offers a vocational experience in which students produce work based around print, film, research, advertising and magazine. This course enables students to move on to a Media A Level with experience and a foundation in the Media Industry.
