Modern Foreign Languages

Head of Department: Mrs C. Hall
Teachers: Mrs B. Gwyther, Miss K. Patrick

With improved travel and communications the world is becoming a smaller place and it is important that we can understand each other and speak to each other. Learning a language helps you to understand other people and also other cultures.

Language qualifications can improve employment prospects in many different career areas.

All students at North Axholme learn French in KS3 and some also have the opportunity to learn German. A modern foreign language lesson may contain a song, a poem, a listening activity, a video clip, a card game, a game on the interactive whiteboard, a reading activity or a writing activity. We also make use of excellent language learning software and have a range of ICT projects for each year group.

In KS4 students may opt for French or German G.C.S.E. which is a multi-skill qualification. It encourages you to express yourself, your ideas and opinions, likes and dislikes and helps to build self-confidence.

!n 2006, 66.7% of students taking G.C.S.E. French achieved grade C or higher.

The department follows the MFL Framework for KS3 and AQA course in KS4.

We aim for pupils to:

-
Develop an understanding of the spoken and written form of at least one modern foreign language
-
Develop the ability to communicate effectively in a modern foreign language
-
Develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing
-
Develop knowledge and understanding of countries/communities where the language is spoken
-
Develop knowledge and understanding of grammar and vocabulary
-
Be able to learn effectively
-
Be able to work independently, in pairs and in groups
-
Enjoy listening to songs, watching videos and learning about life in another country
