Learning a language is not just about learning that particular language. It helps you to develop skills and understanding that will help you in your own language and in learning other languages.
Learning a language is also one of the best ways of learning HOW to learn. We aim to practice the following skills that can be useful in so many situations in school and in the future:
- Memorization techniques.
- Listening skills getting the gist, listening for details, responding appropriately.
- Reading skills - scanning for gist, reading for details, checking understanding, working out new vocabulary and ideas.
- Writing skills - attention to accuracy, adapting texts for different purposes, being creative.
- Speaking skills - being a confident speaker in a range of situations, engaging in role-play situations, expressing preferences and points of view.
- Cultural understanding
Language qualifications are also greatly valued by many employers.
If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.
