This course aims to:

-
Introduce the students to the world of business.
-
Give them an understanding of the activities of each functional area of the business.
-
Invite them ‘inside’ business organisations to study how they are organised from within.
-
Make them consider how external influences might affect specific businesses and how the organisation itself might respond.
-
Give an understanding of the human impact, they as employees, customers and stakeholders can make on a business.
-
Provide an overview of the flow of financial information and documents into, out of and within a business.
-
Show how financial information plays an important role in decision making and the monitoring of progress in a business.

The course consists of three compulsory units:

UNIT 1

Investigating business aims, objectives, ownership, functional areas, communication and external influences, ending in a detailed personal study comparing two businesses and presented as a portfolio ,which is externally marked

 
UNIT 2
People and Business – a detailed investigation of the Human Resource and Customer Service departments of a business, presented as a portfolio , which isexternally marked.
UNIT 3
A study of business finance, making payments, cash flow forecasts and business accounts ending in an externally set examination which is taken in the January of year 11.

To enable the students to understand the various sections of the course they are given the opportunity to visit local and national businesses and participate in Enterprise activities where they have to solve business problems.
